Use the sidescan on at least 1/2 screen. The smaller screen leaves you guessing as i did for ONE YEAR!

Agree. even with my HDS-10, I usually do ALL of my searching with a FULL screen in the SI Mode, set on 60' on BOTH side of boat. It does pretty good on 100'. Then once I see something I want to look at closer, I make a screen switch. I go to Chart/Sonar/Down Scan, and drive right over the top of the object. Now I feel like I am getting the best possible look at the object. I can see exactly what it is on the Down Scan, see what it will look like on Sonar, and know exactly where it is. If it is something I want to leave Marked, I leave the waypoint, if it is not something that interest me, I DELETE the waypoint, reset screen to FULL screen Side Scan, and continue my search.
My brother uses a HDS-5. He usually set for a FULL screen Side Scan, but only looks at one side (Left or Right), and runs at 100'. He will cruise in 3'-5', looking out to the deeper water and scan. This gives him the biggest objects on his screen, and assures him of not missing something important.
Just how us dumb country boys use our equipment.
