50 yamaha two stroke dies when put in gear

Got a problem w/ the motor dying when I put it in gear. Got it to go into gear a few times yesterday but it won't stay cranked especially if I really push the throttle forward. Just bought the boat and the guy who owned it said, and I believe him, that the carbs were just cleaned at a shop in December. Gas looks good w/ no apparent separation and the primer bulb doesn't get rock hard but very firm. Any ideas? Idles good but spits and coughs a bit. Also, seems to be idled a bit low to my untrained ear.

Sounds like a stator problem I had on a 90 Mercury..It idled fine, but died the moment you accelerated..high side was bad.

My dad had a problem like this on a 175 mercury. Start and idle fine when you put in gear it would die. If you did get it gear without killing it would run rough sometimes and other times it would run fine. Took it to mercury mechanic and after a half of day he put a new battery on it. Never have had that problem again. Only thing he could figure was the plates in the battery were loose because everytime it screwed up the volt meter went crazy.

yo may need to adjust the idle screw (idle needle) that is on the side of each carb. sounds like theey may not all be synched very well. for my mercury 2-stroke a good start is to screw each all the way in then back out 2 full turns. start there and adjust accordingly. you may even need to adjust the idle speed (rpm) a little higher

I'd start with the carb and adjust them first. I had a time with my OMC after I rebuilt mmine this fall getting them adjusted.
