Looking to purchase a new fish finder to mount on my trolling motor, I would like to keep it under or atleast around $500. What brand and model do you think would be best for me? Have not had many dealings with the more modern fish finders that have came out in the past 3 or 4 years.

At that price range, you've got several models to choose from, from either brand. What you need to do, first, is to determine what features you need to have in this new unit. Easiest way to do that is to figure out how you're going to use the unit (what it has to do) during the methods of fishing that you use the most.
Having someone else pick the "best for me" (anything) is a bit of a gamble. Without them knowing how you fish, where you fish, and what features a unit must have to benefit your fishing style, you're likely only going to get replies/opinions on what works best for the person replying or what they have ... and that may not fit your criteria.

I've got a HB 896c HD DI mounted on the trolling motor on my new boat. It cost about $550. So far, so good. I went to Bass Pro and got them to demo the several different models that they had before I made a selection. Would advise that you do the same. Good luck.
