I need help picking the correct df and gps. I just purchased a new boat and i wanting to put in some new electronics. I would like something that is fairly easy to use and also something to mark structure that i have sunk. Any help will be appreciated.
not much help but i had hb 798 on my old boat and thought i liked it. put 898 on new boat and it was night and day defference now wish i would of waited a month or so and got the 1198. the money i spent on those two i could of had the 1198.:bash i would say buy the bigest screen you can afford
you don't mention how much you're willing to spend, so that makes hard to suggest what might work for you. You mention structure you've sunk, so DI might be a good one get, or just a good mid level 2d sonar. A hand held gps unit will mark structure with a simple DF/FF, or you can get a 2d/DI combo with the hand held gps, or a gps/DI/2d. The possiblities are almost unlimited, it all depends on what you what, $$, and how you fish, whether trolling, hovering over brush piles, spider rigging, whatever method you prefer.
Mostly i fish over structure. Im willing to spend what it takes to get a quality unit.

2d will show a "cartoon" like image of structure under the boat...
DI will show a "picture" like image of structure under the boat, and out to the sides a few feet...
SI will show a "picture" like image of structure under the boat, out to the sides 100+ feet, AND which side of the boat....
GPS is invaluable for marking structure and being able to return to it over and over....
Decide which of these technologies will best benefit your preferred fishing methods...
Decide how much you are willing to spend.....
Ask more questions here.... Sonar unit technologies are tools... Tools should be suited for the task that you want to use them for....

if you know where the structure is and fish that same structure the majority of the time, DI would probably serve you best as that seems to give the best picture of what's down there, the gps will make it easy to get on the structure every time once you mark it on the gps unit. SI seems to be used more when searching new territory for structure/fish and DI is used more in familiar territory, based on numerous comments I've read on different forums. Suggest you go to a BPS/cableas store and play with the displays to find one you like/meets your needs.
