Painting with the lamp
Did my first session powder painting with my new alcohol lamp. Worked out very well and my jigs seemed much more consistent than they were with the heat gun. Coat was much more even and lighter. I was though unsure how much the wick should be oout. I always thought the flame was not supposed to be very visible. Mine seemed high and yellow. Do I have it set up wrong?

Sounds like your wick wasnt thoroughly soaked with alcohol. My alcohol lamp burns almost invisible if there are any lights on or am outside. Have to be careful to make sure I have it smothered well when I am done.

You don't want more than needed to produce enough flame, maybe a couple inches high. The wick I will guess is sticking up somewhere around or less than 1/2" sticking out. Just enough so it's not really burning up. I have used this same wick for 6 years and is just now getting to the point I need to think about replacing it.

I may just reverse the wick and start again on the other end. I think when I first lit it that is was not soaked as was mentioned. I have a few spots taht burned and may be creating the flame to burn yellower than I would expect. Either way it is working and the jigs are coming out well and I am pleased with the results.

Lighter color may be due to not being strong enough heat or not leaving it in the flame long enough. I've done some this way on purpose so I can get this look. It's light enough, it looks like you can see just a little of the shine of the lead. Makes for a nice jig.
