I got a question. I was watching the beginning of the show DD posted the link to ealrier and when they set their line length they made their inside pole longer and as they went out they were shortening them up, this confuses me.
I pull from the sides of my boat as well but I make my outside poles the longest and the inside the shortest. The reason being is that I can raise the rod that gets a hit and go to the back of the boat and bring the fish in the center not getting tangled in the other lines.
Does everyone else have their inside poles as their longest lines??

inside,have less lines out,thats how i do it

I stagger my lines just until I find the right line out, them set em all at that length. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's their way or yours. I've done it both ways with good results. I try to werk my fish to the side of the rear deck. Once they come up, it's easy to cross em over the other lines.

Anybody on here ever use planer boards?I've been trolling cranks in smaller residential lakes like Woodland and 1 day I decided I would try to use some planer boards that I had bought.With the boards, I was able to use the same 6'6" rods that I used for bass fishing.I had 4 rods off the back side and the boards pulled the 2 outside lines out wider. You can adjust how wide you want your spread. They worked great. I was trolling deep shadraps size 7 in a shad pattern. That's what they seemed to want.With no rattles because the water was clear.I caught 15 nice crappie, a largemouth that weighed 7#6ounces and a Hybrid that weighed 13#'s.I noticed that most of the fish came off the planer board rods.I think the water being clear and the sound the trolling motor was making caused the fish further out to the side to reaction strike as the bait went by! It was a bit harder reeling in the lines with the boards,but they helped keep my lines seperated. I was able to use rods that were the same leingth that I already had for crankin.Back when I started pullin cranks, you never heard of anybody doing it for crappie. Maybe, it was a closely guarded secret then, I don't know.I know I got some wierd looks from other fishermen and got checked all the time by lake patrol at Woodland Lake.I never ever dreamed any of these good old boys would ever use drift socks but they do.Sometime's it's good to experiment. It could teach you a valuable lesson!!

That dang yankee Speck uses em.

There are several of the guys on here that use planer boards. I use 2 7ft rods out the back and a 14ft on each side.

If you search the archives, Jeff White wrote a great article on planers a few years ago.
Tim Huffman also wrote a great article in an on line magazine about cranking and featured Yikess pulling planers.

Rees, I know there are some that do it that way. Longest on the outside. Bigger pulls em that way, I guess it's just a preference is all cause he says he don;t get tangled much either. Main this is keep 10-15 feet of line difference from pole to pole so they don't get tangle
