Gearing up

I plan trying to fish a little more this year. I only went three times last year. Two were crappy trips, trolling.

I have a tracker pro17 with a 40 mariner. Runs decent enough for me. I got a 30# tm. A cheap df on console and an old 'bird on front deck, dont know much about either one as to read the blasted things. I have 4 rod holder. And 4 cheap trolling rods from wallyworld.

I would like to learn to troll jigs. I fish benoit and beulah mostly.

I have about $350 to spend right now. (donations welcome).

I got to get a new battery for this year, whats your suggestions?

Where would you start buying stuff?

Lugnutzz you better be ready, its addictive for sure. These guys will help ya a lot on trolling jigs and minners. Get ready to pull some cranks give me a hollar and I will head that way and you can check that our too.

Do you have a way to control your speed while drifting? Some pre-tied Capps & Coleman double minnow rigs would be nice in a 1/2 ounce size. You may also want to get a handful of gnats from Donnie at crappielogic Do you have a rubber net with a long handle? Just some thoughts to get you started..

Hey Lugnutzz, glad your interested in our sport. You don't have to spend a lot of money to catch fish, it's just that the more fish you catch,the more money you'll be willing to spend to catch more. Most of the delta lakes you can get by with just jig pole or a decent trolling rig. in my opinion stay away from the cheap stuff. It's only worth what your paying for it.Get a name brand trolling or cranking battery, and call Grizzly Jig to get a cataloge for anything crappie related, as their web site leaves a lot to be desired. JMO

Momma loves crappie so i can use the help. i grew up fishing for them with a cane pole, cork, and miners. then as i got old i used jigs. i fished a private oxbow and you fished here for crappie, there for bass, over there for bream. not much science or skill in it, even though it was 100ac lake. i am no longer in that club, however i do fish an oxbow that is connected. just don't know about where and how to fish for crappie, as to xx pattern.

what's your thoughts on the Optima batteries?? pricey but are they worth it. (i have one in my truck and love it.)

Leave the Optima alone, got to get mine warrantuied before March gets here. Wont stay charged, will hold some charge for a while but not a full charge. Understand that this has been a comon thing.

From the sounds of it, if I were you with $350 to spend, I'd get me as big of a lead acid battery that I could find local (Group 31) for about $100, get me 3 or 4 good rods of your choice and spend the rest on line and jigs and go fishing. $350 ain't gonna buy much toward a fancy smancy new fish finder, or at least on that's gonna tell you more than you can already see, but good rods will make a big difference and you can't never have enough jigs and line. Good advice on the gnats from Donnie BTW.

Gotcha. I got quite a few tube jigs already and line. Trying to decide on batts and how many. One troll, one crank. Or two troll/crank (combo) wired parallel?
