Underspin reels

Hello all new to sight and first post. Was wondering if anyone has tried the new style Daiwa underspin reels? I have an older one that I bought at a grage sell and its about on its last limb. Any info would help. Thanks

Just buy a spinning reel. Same mechanics only they aren't junk.

I like 'em. I wish I had them all my jigging rods. I have Diawas, Pfluegers and Zebcos. I like the fact I can easily trip the bail with one hand as I do a lot of 'pitching to rocks, docks and laydowns. With a spinning rod it takes a little more time to manually flip the bail and then I seem to bend the bails frequently when I drop the rods on the deck. Seems like they can take the abuse better - but I don't like the narrow spools or how it coils your line. However, - switch to braid and that problem goes away.

Here's another suggestion. I've been using a Shimano Spirex SR2500 RD as my crapie reel for about 10 years ( have 3 of them ) and can highly recommend them. Cheap: $59.99 at Bass Pro. Love the Quick Fire II one-hand casting system. Have had no problems with them ... just clean them every so often. Like to use braided line on them. They have 5 bmgs, good drag system, and can handle larger fish if you get one. It's worth taking a look at before you buy. Bass Pro used to do a package deal with this reel and one of their graphite rods for about $80, but I haven't seen them for sale like that in about a year.

I love the one I have but like you said the line does coil alot more, but it just seems easier to stop the line if you pitch it a little harder than you wanted and there smooth as well. Ive been looking at flugers but ive heard if you fish alot they quite catching the line to reel it in a 3-4 month span.

Look at the CHEAP Shakespeare underspins. They have a dual (2) pin pickup system which is a lot better than most. I too like the underspins for the ease of casting and keeping lure in water (Thats where the fish are). Good luck
