just got a 18 ft impact ss lund w/115 mecury. i fish a lot in stumps and shallow water. am i going to damage the transducer or tear it off ? how can i protect it from damage ? also will i be able to read deph running 45 mph? i have a1198 c si that this ducer will be running off of.

I just bought a Lund 18ft Explorer w/115. These two boats are very simular. I mounted my transducer for my Lowrance on the back of the boat as it stated in the Lowrance instructions. What I did do however is with the bolt and nylon lock nut I did not tighten so tight as the transducer will not flip up when I hit something. It is firmly tightened but not so tight as it will not do this. Just 1/2 if the transducer extends below the back half of the hull. I ran mine yesterday out on the lake and the readings were good. 45mph on your impact is a little high in your gestimate with the standard 17p 3 blade aluminum prop they put on the 115 from the dealer. 40mph is very close....thats what I ran mine at yesterday via GPS.
On my champion 20ft boat I did the same thing and I had it strike stuff but it always flipped up and I could tell because the sonar reading was obviously grossly off. Most of the transducers are pretty tough and can take a fair amount of beating. Now of course if you get the perfect hit and it trashed but ......

Breaking a ducer can happen in any boat. I just had to replace mine, I have one on the TM and one on the transom, was fishing one day in strong wind in a stump field, and the wind blew the back of the boat right on top of a stump. Broke clean off at the mount. Mine would move, just like already mentioned, but if you hit it just right it will break.
Hey guys! I have a Transducer Shield and Saver on my trolling motor. Bought from Bass Pro, P-466 in master catalog. broke off at the neck , saved from buying a new transducer. This is a standard transdecer, but their web site shows models to fit the new SI, DI,transducers......... Good Luck
Most of the transducer designs are to protect from a frontal impact but as Locator79 stated: strong winds can blow your boat. If the transducers hit a stump sideways they can be broken without kicking upwards. The Transducer Shield & Saver brackets that Crappie1133 mentioned appear to protect the transducers from all angles but are not cheap. Still buying one would be less expensive than replacing a $250+ transducer…
