both HB & Lowrance make decent/good DF in that range, should go to BPS if one is near you and play with all of 'em, and see which one is best for you or that you like the best. I have a Low Mark 5x pro dual beam that I like so far, but have limited play time with it.
I've had good luck with my HB PiranhaMax 160. It's very basic but has dual beam (20- and 60-degree angles) and 4-inch screen. I have the Portable version that comes with a carrying case, battery and suction cup transducer for about $130. The 170 version has a little better screen resolution (8 levels of greyscale, rather than 4) and is only $100 (non-portable, fixed installation). The color version is the 190c at around $210.
The 160 marks the bottom, structure, water temp and fish pretty reliably as best I can tell. Nothing fancy but gets the job done.
Depends what options you're looking for. There's some good deals on the "classified" forum. Check it out.
the humminbird 161 is a good 1. it has built in gps. but no color. but has good definition of the bottom. split screens. i have 1 and it works fine. hard to find a gps unit that is that cheap. price runs from 200 to 300 dollars. i got mine at walmart a few years back on clearance for 200. but retail for 300. bu there are several online around 200.
