Any one use chicken feather for tying materials?
Yes, several different kinds
Lots of the feathers we use are just that. Different types of chickens, but chicken and turkey feathers make up a lot of what we use. There's some well dressed chickens I never knew of.
Yep, I've actually got a buddy that raises roosters...every now and then one dies, he calls me, and I go collect new tying material lol.
Most of the hackle used on jigs is Neck hackle from chickens and marabou is from turkeys. Fly tiers mostly use special blood line chickens/Roosters for their dry flies and streamers and such. They are not from regular chickens. Also lots of Coq De Leon Chickens for soft hackle and Rooster for other stuff are used and are the older bread chickens that are bread just for fly tying.
I tied my first jig with chicken feathers. A buddy of mine had some chickens and one got ran over. He told me about it and I asked if he would go pull those long neck feathers out and he did. To this day that jig tied with those feathers and a brown head and black thread is my favorite for gills. Looks like a cricket colored buggy lookin thing. I wish I had more of them feathers but I dont even know what kind of chicken it was.
