Sunday Fishing

Went out this morning to do a little perch jerking. We caughta lot of small fish. Color of the day was pink with a gold flake back that I just poured up this morning. Also caught a tagged bass, Here's a pic of the eight fish kept. Of course Ialways check the stomach contents of all the fish I keep. Most were filled with shad, some were 4 inches. A few had small crabs and one fish had a baby pickerel.

I like checking out the stomachs too , this week ours had just small stuff like shrimp and some kinda larvae looking stuff 1 had a piece of a rubber worm in it. I see you got snow on the ground over there ,ours was gone by daybreak yesterday.

Just got to see what they be eating. I guess I'm sort of matching the hatch. The snow melted a little today and refoze to a nice slippery surface. Taking my dog for a walk in the field was a real treat tonight.

One I caught last year (1/20/2011) spit this up. This little circular thing in the pic is the head of a 3/16" rivet. (so 1/4 in dia.) This shad was 4" long! That was quite a mouthful for a 13" perch.....and he ate my bait!

I'm amazed at the size at the size of the baitfish they eat and still take a lure. One perch have 4 shad in it's belly. I read an artical that a sudden 5 degree temperature shift kill the smaller shad. Maybe this cold blast put a the hurt on the shad so the perch will filling up. Going to try again tomorrow.

man what a catch... i see yellow perch are really active on cold temps... are they strong fighters or not so tough? but congrats on the diner!

Perch are active all year round. In the winter they school up tight, so if you catch one there will be more around. This also holds true for crappie.They are not the best fighters but are great on the table.
