boat guru's i got a prop question ?

well i baught a new boat last year and did not put a ss prop on it just to see how long a aluminum would last me.. well i got my answer.. not long. so now i'm buying a steel prop. question is this. my boat has a 90 yamaha 2 stroke on it.( it's an 1860 aluminum boat). the prop on the boat now is a 14 1/2 X 15 . to stay the same far as the performance(speed/out of hole/etc) would you stay the same or go up or down in pitch going to a ss prop. someone had told me to go up one step on pitch when changing to ss i think... but i cant remember

anyone with the same set up ?

Where you live? You might call Art at Propeller Services in Ridgeland, MS. He is the best around. You might call Duncan Marine in Brandon, MS. They are Yamaha dealers. Send Big River Marine a pm and ask him. One out of the 3 should be able to answer your question.

I usually stay with the same size, if you're in the correct RPM range. The SS will still give you a better Hole Shot, and a little better Top End because it won't have as much slippage.

Not that I know a whole lot about this, but I believe that aluminum prop blades will bend to a certain degree under heavy loads of higher HP motors. I don't know if a 90 would be up into that range or not. I'm sure it would a small bit but not to the degree of, say, a 200 or 225hp motor would. Also the stainless props don't give! If you hit something in the water like a rock or something, you may chunk or break of a blade or maybe even spin off the splines on an aluminum prop. A stainless is more likely to cause serious damage to the internals of your lower unit under the same circumstances. Just my 2 cents worth.

Go with the same size and pitch. I have always liked the ss props better than aluminum.

Prolly stay the same, although you might could step up 1 pitch or possible even two depending. The best advice your gonna get is to find a good prop man, talk to him and listen to his advice. Propping boats is 1 part experience, 2 parts trial and error and 3 parts voodoo.
