Fly Fish For Crappie

I am hoping by next spring we have enough water so I can do a little fly fishing for crappie. I just tied this new for me fly I have been wanting to tie it for months and finally got the time. Am not very happy with this first one as the hook is a bit too small ( just will buy what it calls for before I do more of them)and I really can do a better job than this, but think you guys will get the idea. So do you think this will catch a crappie?

Looks real good to me, it'll catch more than Crappie. Couldn't you use bead chain for the eyes so the hook point would ride up?

I also like the bead chain eyes idea. That looks like a winner to me Skip. Natural colored stuff has been doing well for me lately, so I might tie in a balck or gray stripe on the top of it to simulate a minnows back. That will definitely put fish in the boat. I'm hoping you get your boat out of the slings for Christmas.

Actually I was suppose to use a larger hook and lots of guys fish for small mouth bass with this bait. The design of it is a simple tie and there os more reason to not use beed chain eyes or dumbbell eyes. The head will end up feeling kind of like a soft plastic and the eyes will not some off. You could actually just not use eyes at all if one wanted to. Next time I order from my supplier I will get some #2 up to 2/0 for this. I can do better. Also the chenille is not a normal one we use in tying so it's a bit big, but I have caught lots of crappie on a big bait like a jig with soft plastic worm fishing for bass in the spring so don't think it's size will hurt it at all.

I'd balance it by adding a touch of lead wire to the hook shank and keep the neon green eyes. Just saying.....

From about the hook point to the front eye is coated with Liquid Nails and once dry makes it feel like a soft plastic on the head. Also they say it should be fished dead stick much like some bass spot plastics (like a sinko). Small twitches, like 2" or maybe 3". They say it traps a bit of air inside that head with the flex glue on it which almost makes it neutral buoyant so almost suspends.
