every time the weather drops into the 20's or so my steering cables freeze up on my boat.not that im going to be fishing in 20 degrees but, after it warms during the day get out. Is there anything that i can do to solve this problem? i was thinking about covering boat and put a space heater inside boat, but i dont no how safe that would be. any help, thanks
probabley have some moisture in the lower part ofcable or he grease is gitting stiff at that degre. cover boat and hange a 100 wat bulb inside.
I had same problem which slowly got worse and worse. Going around a bend one day and was not able to steer out of it. Decided to replace them and the difference was incredible, the boat was a joy to drive again! I've seen some products which allow you to inject grease into the cable, I only tried one but it didn't make any difference. If the cables have any age on them, I'd say the safe thing to do is go ahead and replace them. You'll be glad you did.
Make sure your cable is not binding in the motor braceket. If not order a new cable or go hydraulic. I was like bluewater I put it off for years and was amazed at the difference.
that is probly what i should do just bite the bullet and get new cables im sure they are the original ones and it is a 82 champ
I don't know what size your motor is but last winter mine froze up completely and I broke the rack trying to unseize them. I have a 150 and it requires a dual cable system, I did some checking and for $40 more I went hydraulic. Fore and Aft Marine was the place. No more stiff cables, no more yearly maintenance, no worries. On my 85 Champion you have to remove/loosen the motor to service the cables. Never again, just lube the pivots on the motor and fish. I had 3 different buddies who had done the same thing. The change out was similar to an Indy pit crew, but 1 guy and an afternoon and your done permanently. If you do get froze up and have to "lean" on it, turn it to the left!
Does anyone have any experience with regular cable steering? I have a 1998 369B Javelin and the steering is terribly hard. I know I can buy hydraulic steering for about 1k dollars but will the replacement steering cables make it any better?
Fore and Aft Marine supply-hydraulic steering $439. Up to 150hp. New cables will make all the difference in the world, for a while. Look on your tilt tube and see if theres a grease zerk. This is for greasing the cables which if you go to Teleflexs website its NOT recommended. Many brands of boats you have to loosen the motor to run the cables
