Nope, take the winter "off". I dont like the idea of ice fishing really.....
Lots of people ice fish for them and do very well. Check out the Ice board for tips.
Since we don't get any ice here in Georgia, I just use live bait under a float. I've had lots of 60-fish days in Nov/Dec/Jan. As I said in other threads, most people fish for gills during the spawn and ignore them the rest of the year. They're missing out, but that means I have 'em all to myself. :)
As for depth, it really depends on where you're fishing. I catch a lot of fish in the 6-10' range, but that's deep water where I fish.
I like to target large bluegill, 12 t0 14 foot weedlines. I use two 1/80th black flu-flu jigs one foot apart, 18 inches above sinker with spike or waxie, seems the bigger bluegill like this combination............Granite
In ways they're easier to catch through the ice, just need to understand the finesse approach. 1/64th - 1/100th oz jigs, mainly tungsten, and a max of 2# flouro line is the ticket, sometimes 8oz. Slow metabolism/movement but seemingly more feisty once hooked. Biggest 'gills I've ever caught have been through the ice. It's normal up here and more people look forward to it than open water.
Really fun gillin on the ice. Got these using a fiskas jig with a black plastic tail, in 8ft water.

Pretty fish & good eats. Have you got a picture of a flu flu we can look at.
where i live doesnt get cold enough for ice fishing, i think i will try to fish at the dam since i always caught them during summer and spring in shallow, but not sure how deep they will be during winter, im gonna find out soon.
How deep ?? That is relative to the body of water UR Fishin .... I have caught them 1 1/2' deep over 10 + feet of water on what I call a cold day in the south east. .
I fish Lake Cumberland here in Ky around docks and fish 15 to 30 fow. I fish with a popeye and wax worm them biggins will nail it. Sometimes you get a bonus and catch a big slab crappie.
