I'm cheap or "Redneck" Tying bench or How to make your own Tying bench!!!!!
ok so I am a cheap SOB!... I know this...LOL...I got to looking at all the vices and whatnots on the net (man those things are not cheap).. and well since I am just starting out I thought.
1. what if I just don't like doing it?
2. what if I realy suck at it?
3 I'm a cheap SOB!
so I found a few things laying around the shop and at work and put that cheap depo brain to work.. here is what I came up with.
Attachment 74874
here is the list:
1 peice of scrap plywood 3/4 inch
2 pices of 2x2
scrap foam
cut off ends of a magnetic door sign
a pice of 1/8 plastic (optional )
1 10inch bolt with 2 nuts and 2 wahsers
1 needle knose "vice grips"----if you don't weld then have someone do it for you!
a few nails and a few wood screws
tools I used:
circular saw---any saw you have will work.
Drill
screw gun
glue of some kind---I used Garrila Glue (love that stuff)
verious drill bits
Drimmal or some other "cut off" tool
marker of some kind.
I cut the top off of the 10inch bolt with my drimmal and tack welded it to the needle knose vice grips...grips at about a 45 degree angle.
Then do the following.... if you dare!
First I cut my blue plastic to the size I wanted my bench to be.
then cut the plywood to match.
attached the plastic to the plywood with glue
cut and attach the sides (2x2's) with wood screws
drilled hole for vice in the short side 2x2.. I'm right handed so mine is on the left!
drill BIGGER hole thru the same 2x2 so that you can attach the washer and nut to the bottom of the vice inside the 2x2.
drill holes for your thread spool pins in the long back 2x2 (on the top of course)
useing the dremmal I cut the heads off of the nails.
Thread a nut to the top of the bolt threads and a wahser.. slide vice into the vice hole and attach 2nd washer and bolt (a bit tricky here.. I widened the hole with a paddle bit).. tighten down the top nut untill you feel its secure enough.
cut foam to go over the top of your vice 2x2... I put a small slit and cut out for the vice nut and slide it around the vice and down onto the 2x2 .. make sure it fits (you only get one shot after you glue it).. glue it down.... this is optional.. I wanted somplace to put the finished jigs.
put glue int the thread spool holders and insert nails.
cut your magnetic strips to the size you wish ( I put one on the front side of the sopp holder and one on top).. this is for holding your tools so they don't get lost.
Poof!.. your done!
