The Kaw Lake Killer!!!
A few seasons ago, I was invited to fish Kaw lake with a couple of friends; and one of these guys is a crappie guide and area fishing legend. We put the boat in below the dam, and the guide drove around for a few minutes studying his sonar graph, and the currents of the swirling swift water. We finally anchored in a nice eddy, and he said: " Let's fish guys". I had tied up some jigs the night before, and used a color combination that I had used before on Kaw with good success. I tied on one of my jigs, and my two buddies tied on jig heads and put Bobby Garland plastics on them. I threw out and on my first cast a big thump let me know it had been bit. I reeled in a big fat keeper, and threw it in the livewell. I walked back to my seat, and threw out again. The jig never found bottom as a heavy thump indicated another strike. I set the hook and reeled in another fat crappie, and threw it in the livewell. Now, my friends were looking at me closely, and the guide said; "What the heck are you using?" I said I was using one of my hand tied jigs, and threw out again. Once again... the jig never found bottom as a strike pulled the line tight and I reeled in another keeper Crappie! I did this six casts in a row, and my partners had not had a bite yet!! As I was putting keeper number six in the livewell, the guide said; "To hell with this! Give me one of those darn jigs!" My other partner reeled in and asked for one too. I had three cards of six jigs for a total of 18 jigs. I gave my two partners a card of six jigs each. The next few minutes were a fisherman's dream!!! We lit the crappie up, and had triple hookups on several times. The swft discharge water, rocks, and old line on bottom began to cause us to loose a jig every now and then, but we were filling up the livewell with some giant crappie and loving every minute of it! It was the best day of crappie fishing I had ever experienced! Eventually the snags cost me my last jig! I was flabbergasted when I realized it was my last one! I looked around at my buddies and asked if anyone had one of those jigs left. My buddy said with a chuckle: "You mean one of those Kaw Killers!" I said yes, and he dug around in his pocket. He then said that he too was using his last one. Then my other buddy said; "Where did I lay those things?" As we scanned the boat for the card of jigs, eveyone's eyes at once locked on the steering console, as one last Kaw Killer laid there in a package. I smiled real big and reached for it... but my buddy was quicker!!! He smiled as he held up the pretty jig, and said; "Well, well... the last Kaw Killer. Hmmmm.... what would be a fair price for the last one?" I looked at the livewell counter and realized we were at 109 crappie, and mentioned that we only need two keepers and we would be done. My buddy said: "Well... I figure this last Kaw Killer is worth about ten bucks out here on the water at this time! Do you want the last one for ten bucks?" I couldn't believe my ears and stood there with a perplexed look on my face? Then my two buddies cracked up laughing and Jimmy tossed me the last Kaw Killer! "Tie it on"; he said, "And let's knock out this limit of big Crappie!" I tied it on, and was back in business. We could have ended our trip and at any time, as we were catching them on almost every cast, but we enjoyed the wonderful day, doing catch and release for a while before a really large jumbo model was caught, and it was just too big to throw back. The livewell clicker went to 111.... and we ended a wonderful day of fishing. To this day... we still joke around about the T-BONE "Kaw Killer" jigs and a truly remarkable day on the water!!!
