I would like to see the KDFWR do something to protect certain areas of the lakes during the spawn.
If I had it my way, I would shut down certain bays/coves during the spawn, or make certain coves/bays catch and realease during the spawn.
I have seen a lot of Bass fisherman sight fish, they will catch big female bass right off the nest. If certain bays/coves were catch and realease or closed during the spawn this would not happen. The fish could be untouched during the spawn, and they could not be caught/or removed from the lake while on the nest.
This would save thousands, probably tens of thousands of Bass, and Crappie each year on KY Lake and Barkley Lake.IMO
I think that was covered in the townhall report ... and their research came to the conclusion that it wouldn't really help all that much, while at the same time diminishing the potential for anglers & local businesses.
Considering that only a small percentage of the fry will make it to adulthood, closing a few bays probably wouldn't make much of a change in the population. The dynamics of those lakes swings back & forth over a number of years ... and add to that the cyclic nature of the fish, themselves, and you're going to have the boom & bust periods ... probably regardless of what is done (or not done).
