I have heard that sinking hay bales around crappie structure will help bring in baitfish, I have a few old straw bales that have gotten wet and have grass growing out of them and was wondering if they would do the same thing. Has anyone tried this and does it work?
I've heard of using alfalfa, could'nt hurt to try. Minnows feed off algae and it should grow some.
Have also heard of using them, but apparently they only last about 3 months. The guys said though for about 3 months they WORKED WELL! Placed them on the fall and ice fished on them all winter, would imagine the colder water slowwed down the decay/ decompisition. Not sure how long they would last if dropped in during the spring or summer...
I have seen them used for catfish chum... it can realy bring those channles in too

Try to stake them down. I have seen bales, mostly big round bales float down on the dam and really cause problems with intakes.
it takes a while for a bale to sink sometime up to two weeks if you don't tie weights ?Ive got three in now but no fish yet

oh no.. they work... but yeah they will float!.. they bring in the bait fish like you wouldn't belive.. and its cheap.Quote:
