Anyone every tried using vinyl?
I've used a little when I've run short on wood, think it should work fine. If have access to free scrap I would definitely give it a shot.
Peepaw would be the 1 to ask. Yes, by itself it seems to hold bigger crappie but not as often as when placed with natural cover, or at least in my opinion. Place the vinyl deeper than the natural cover. the 2 types TOGETHER seem to be the best of both worlds; they seem to "compliment" each other...
if you are refering to vinyl sideing like off a house, i tried it this summer it looks great but dont go to tall or it bows over due to no strength. it also is fragile while in boat can easily be destroyed (known from experience)
The height and width of the material is directly affected by the base diameter as well. If you had any material that was fragile it must have been awfully old and weathered. The material we select is pliable to bend to shape yet stay rigid. Some stuff even gets passed up for being to soft and bends to easy. Our cribs are the furthest from fragile you can get. Try breaking or tearing a piece next time you find some. Took some time of trial and error to come up with a custom machine set up to rip material lengthwise in mass succession. Holds fish like crazy.
I built 9 'brushpiles' using split pvc water piping stuck in cement bases earlier this year, and sunk them in various spots around the lake. Now, they are holding enough algae to attract minnows, and the crappies seem to like them. Most of the plastic pieces are between 5 and 7 feet long, and they are flexible and almost unbreakable. I split the pvc pipe on my table saw, and then hand-sanded each piece to roughen the surface so the algae would grow and cling to the plastic. I stuck 12 to 16 pieces in each concrete base. So far so good, but they DO NOT show up on my Garmin fish finders. Maybe when they are loaded with algae they will, but not so far. At least I know where they are. Can't wait til next spring!
We have'nt had much luck around it here , but in places with little wood cover should work.
It sure works for large fish....

Hey David,
Attached is a fish I caught right off the deep edge of the structure
you sent me...52 inch mama in September. Caught a few more casting
the deep side of the structure layout...needless to say I am sold on
your products and I will be getting more in the spring. I didn't get
to fish much in October and that is usually my favorite month (too
many work and kid things going on) I am thinking your structures will
have the greatest benefit in early spring and late fall fishing
applications. These are the times when weed growth is low and your
artificial products will offer bait fish a shelter...and attract our
bass, pike, and muskies!
What benefits if any have folks seen placing them for ice fishing?
Maybe even in deeper water for walleyes or crappies in the winter? My
brain will be processing good spots to place structure...right now 25
yards off the end of my dock comes to mind so we can hammer sunfish
and bass with the kids. Would that be cheating? Hahaha
Take care,
Paul
