I have got a brand new unit and havent really used it that much. Yesterday when using it, it seemed like every little bit the screen would go from looking normal to just cluttered with solid color. Turn the unit off and it would be normal again. What is the appropriate battery to wire it too? Could there be some kind of interference causing it. Thanks for the help.
mine was doing the same thing it was getting interference from the trolling motor ,i called HB and they sent me another power cord and it fixed mine!!!!!!
What type battery should it be hooked up to? I believe mine is hooked up to cranking battery. Also when I sped my boat up the screen goes haywire and says 200,300 then 700 feet.
the HB should be hooked up to the cranking batt, this eliminates one source of electrical interference but not all sources. Make sure the HB power wire is not close to the TM power wire as this can cause interference when using the TM. Cross the 2 power wires at 90 degrees if needed, opposite sides of the boat if all possible. You may have the ducer mounted in an area on the transom that gets turbulance from the big motor, I'm thinking that there is a upper speed limit of 8-10mph on DI units before the picture goes fuzzy and inaccurate, but not sure on HB units.
The water depth number is taken from the 2D sonar in the Humminbird units. Sounds like you may be getting electrical interference of some sort as well as air around the transducer at higher boat speeds as jimp stated. Next time out on the water try turning off all other electronics on the boat and see if it shows that clutter again or not. Than start turning each piece of electronic equipment back on again until you see the interference again.Quote:

For the high speed readings; try lowering the transducer and/or lowering the back end of the transducer slightly. You have to get it into clean air bubble free water to work at faster speeds.

I think it is being causes primarily by trolling motor battery. I need to look and see how it is hooked up as I had my local marine guy do it for me. It seems when I run the trolling motor on high that it gets like this. Also when I am using my outboard. I only have a 25 hp so top speed is around 20 mph.
When I turn the unit on it is fine. When I am just idling it is fine. When I give big motor throttle or turn trolling motor on high is goes haywire. Have to turn it off and then turn it back on again and it is fine.
So you are saying that it should be ran directly from unit to cranking battery?
Went and took a look at the setup. It is not hooked up to same battery as trolling motor. However, since I didn't wire it myself it appears that the power cord has been hooked into the fuse box of the boat. The outboard is hooked to the cranking battery and I would assume that all the other items, livewell, nav lights, bilge pump, etc are hooked to fuse box and one wire runs from there to cranking battery. Could this be any of my problem. If there needs to be one wire from unit to cranking battery that setup definately is not in place.
Inteference can come from many sources or a combination of sources...
Running dedicated wires from the battery to the unit will help separate the HB from any other shared electronics wires...
Also, try to run the HB's dedicated wires down the opposite side of the boat from the TM power wires...
Interference can be a bugger to track down sometimes... Keep at it...it will be worth it in the end....

Not sure that this will cure what you are seeing but it is the first step to take in a (possible) multi-step process.
If that does not clear it all up than you could try turning up the Noise Filter in your 596c DI unit.
If that does no provide enough help than try getting out on the lake a drift so that you can rev the motor while it is out of gear to see if that makes the interference show up or not. if it does than make sure you are running a resistor type spark plugs in your 25hp motor. You may end up needing a separate battery to power your 596c DI unit from.
