2D vs DI vs SI

Here are three screen shots of the same piece of structure. Notice the fish on the structure. The 2D sensitivity is a little hot but you can tell from the 2D and DI how deep you should fish. The DI helps break out the fish a little bit better than the 2D. The SI is the ticket though.. it tells you what side of the boat and give you a great look at the structure so you know exactly what you are fishing and where it is located.

I have some question. I recently purchased my first boat which has a 2d finder. Can you explain what i am looking at in the first picture? Would left to right on the screen be front to back of the boat or what? i assume the si relates the si lake bottom as far left and right of the screen? thanks in advance.

The most current data is what youre seeing on the very right of the 2D screen. Everything else is what you have already passed. Cannot help you on the SI and DI screenshots.

Tiger .... the far right of a 2D or DI is the newest/current info coming in to the unit --- everything else on the screen, all the way to the far left, is history (or what you've already gone across with your transducer cone). Depends on where you have the transducer mounted, and what direction your boat is going, as to whether or not the screen is showing "front to back of boat" .... but, it's not a static picture of what's "front to back" UNDER the boat. Cone angle degree plays a role in how much is shown on the screen. A 20deg cone angle will show a circle on the bottom, that's 1/3 as wide as the depth. In other words, if you're in 21ft of water, the widest part of the cone (bottom) is 7ft wide. A 60deg cone angle gives a bottom cone width that's equal to the depth .. or 21ft wide in 21ft of water. BUT ... the center of that circle is directly under the transducer, in either case, depending on wherever it is mounted.

Yes, the SI units read both left & right of the boat, and in this case it's reading 50ft to either side. It gives a broader span of info, and a better overall picture of what's underneath & out to the sides, than a 2D or DI.

If I was reading the top pic ... I'd assume it was showing a 5' tall bush, with the possibility of some fish nearby.
If I was reading the middle pic ... I'd assume it was showing a 5' tall tree or bush, on the edge of a drop, and possibly some stumps ... maybe even some schools of baitfish prior to coming upon the tree/bush.
If I was reading the bottom pic ... I'd assume I'd just ran over a school of fish, slightly off to the left of the school.

If the sensitivities of the 2D & DI were dialed in a little better, it would be easier to distinguish that they were showing the same thing the SI is showing.
