Why?? 3 dozen+ yellow bass and no crappie!! KY--Lake

To say the least I've struggled the last two weeks putting any crappie in the boat. Now if I was fishing for yellow bass I would be excited!!! But I went out today and caught nothing but yellow bass after yellow bass. Same spots as last fall and same spots as early spring/summer and being only a 2nd year crappie fishermen, I felt like I did pretty well last year and this spring/summer. But this fall has really got me wondering what the heck is going on!!!

So do the yellow bass and crappie hang together? Or am I just in the wrong dag-gum spot?

Thanks to anyone for any advice as why I'm slaying the yellow bass and no crappie. 9-13 FOW---Jigs tipped with minnows--Jigs with crappie nipples--fishing some type of structure.

From my experience when you start catching the sand bass ur pretty close to the Crappie just start fishing different pots in that area.

Should I maybe go deeper/shallower or another color jig?

What color jig ya use'n? Ain't got yella in it does it? What lake ya fish'n?

Blood...and no yellow whatsoever....Black/chart/pin/char...

I was on KY yesterday too, we caught yellows and largemouth but no crappie. I did however manage to lose my camo float coat :mad:, at some point it blew out of the boat. We went back and looked around but I knew someone would pick it up. I didn't catch supper, but I did learn to put my coat in dry storage when i take it off Doh.

Wish I had the answer for you. I'm as puzzled as you. Had the same thing today on Malcom Creek. At least 30 yellow bass and no keeper size crappie. We tried deep and shallow. covered alot of water, but same result. We were using minnows.

Same here. My mom caught an 11 incher and then my dad caught some yellas....of course, I took the skunk!

I also fished deep/shallow and covered a ton of water as well. Makes me feel somewhat better that I'm not the only one.

Just felt like the crappie bite should've already been better than what I've experienced.

It'll get better as the water temps get closer to 60. Right now the dinks & yellas are pour'n into the bays try'n to get their share before the fat boys get to the buffet.

I have found in the past (especially in the late winter/early spring) if you're catch'n yellas, the Blacks are close. Remember you are competing against a slough or live bait this time of year. Do your best to "match the hatch." Bigger profile baits may be the ticket. I have also found that often the bigger fish want the bait move'n at these water temps. You may be better off cast'n rather than vertical jig'n. If you're spider rig'n or long line'n, try speed'n up & slowing down.

When food is abundant you have to try different things to trigger a reaction strike. 1/8th & 1/16 oz road runners work good at these water temps. Just make sure you count down & get under the yellas. Stay away from jigs with yellow in them, they love yellow! Lastly, KEEP EVERY 1 OF THE LITTLE SUCKERS YOU CATCH! They are great eat'n & they're about to take Ky Lake over! Oh, and they love to eat crappie eggs & fry!
