I am on a budget. I have been fighting myself over the pros and cons of getting either a fish finder or trolling motor, as I have neither, each have their own advantages, f-f can find depth, fish, structure, and some have gps. trolling motors provide a quiet way to troll in shallow lakes without disturbing fish, adjustable speed. my question is which is best to get first?
IMO trolling motor wins hands down.
Yep trolling motor no question. Or look for used and see if you can get both. I just put a new finder on my boat so I am actually going to sell my other one. Let me know if used is an option.

Lots of good ideas here. What kind of boat? You said GPS, My thinking being: a transom mount motor and an entry level ff and your in business. I couldn't do without either now days.
Buying used when budget is tight is a no brainer. It really depends on how you like to fish. I rarely use my trolling motor anymore since I know serveral spots to set up over. If you have a big motor that you'll be traveling fast with, a ff would be a priority to me so I could see when I was in shallow water to be able to slow down for safety. Regular trolling can be done with the big motor, slow trolling would require a TM. Working a bank would also merit the TM.
I myself set up over brush, drop anchors and fish. I'll move if they're not there. I do use my trolling motor a lot during the spawn.
