How long would 8 double A batteries stay charged on a Hummingbird 150
I recently bought 2 of these Amazon.com: Humminbird 7700281 GCBK Portable Gel-Cell Battery and Charger: Electronics I think I only paid $25 each for them, and they come with charger. Nice batteries, recharge quickly, and don't weigh much. Pay for several sets of AA's and you've could have bought one of these. I can toss it in a small bag (or tacklebox) along with my ReelLite and it will run all night.
Neon has the right battery for a portable, or go online at cabelas for the same battery. This battery will will last all day running my lowrance 520 and gps while ice fishing.
The 150/160 manual doesn't mention anything about using AA batteries, nor does it list the power consumption (what kind of spec sheet doesn't list the power consumption? Sheesh!)
My 160 Portable came with a 7amp/hour sealed battery that weighs about 5 lbs. After I had already rigged a place to recharge it (next to the trolling motor battery in the garage), I read the manual that said one battery charge will last about 6 months! You can get a 7AH battery for about $20, see Amazon.com: 7ah battery You'll save money in the long run and never worry about having enough battery.
900mAH maximum, so less than an hour most likely, and it's possible that they can't supply the surge to boot the unit. They drop fairly quickly to 1.3V, so you'd really need 9 batteries. They are typically intended for applications drawing about 25mA, about 1/6th of what most electronics draws, so to be optimum you'd need 54 AA batteries to power the unit and then you'd get about 10 hours out of them.
I've seen videos on Youtube.com about installing a fish finder on there kayak and they are using 8 double A's to power their fish finder. The lawn mower battery I have is kind of a pain!!

The 7Ah battery is the way to go. It consists of 10 cells and delivers a full 12v+. How long a 7Ah battery runs your finder depends entirely on the current draw. When I first got my HB 1197SI, I planned to run it on a 7Ah battery. Three or four hours into the day, the battery was drained and the 1197 shut itself down. I didn't want to carry an extra trolling battery for that unit, but it demands that much juice.
