My '92 40hp Johnson gave me a fit also untill i started at the tank and replaced all the old rubber lines and parts with some that could handle ethanol rebuilt carbs 4 times in the process, fuel pump once, the last thing giving me the fit was the enricher. Two years and no further trouble, also changed from 'cheap' gas to Chevron or Shell. Hope you find a good mech and rid of the awful time.--shu
hey, fetmo i new 40hp suzuki four stroke will fix your problems with that old johnson!!!!!!!!!!
when i get to the lake it will start and run great for about the first 10-20 min then motor starts acting like its running out of gas. kinda lunges fast slow fast slow...then dies it will restart prety quickly then the same thing over again. if it isnt surging you can put the throttle all the way forward and only runs like 2 mph. took me 30 min to get across lake Maumelle yesterday.
i replaced the fuel line and bought a new tank...still troubles

my 115hp tohatsu has done the same thing since it was new....but only does it sporadically. might run it half dozen times with no trouble and then, bam, does it again. been told it's going into limp-home mode but everything checks out (oil press, water press)....have had it looked at several times with no diagnosis
High speed jets are stopped up on the Johnson or trash in the bowl stopping the fuel flow. Need to have the carbs cleaned and new fuel filter. Add an inline filter to the new fuel line between the bulb and engine also. If the fuel enricher (solenoid) is bad you will have excess oil running out of the hub exhaust. Usually!!
Sounds like you are on the right track Fetmo, you may have a clogged tank vent, wasps like to boiled nests in vent lines. Also you may have a cracked pulse hose between your pulse limiter and fuel pump on your motor but that is a long shot as it runs for some time before it starts acting up. An air leak or restriction, clogged filter anywhere in your fuel system could possibly cause the mentioned symptoms, but so could a weak coil or dirty connection causing a cylinder to drop. I hope this helps you.
