For those of you that pour your own. Is there a special type occurring tool that you can get to cut the excess lead off the top of the jig to keep it round???

There called gate cutters....Myself I dont use them. I tried them once but it leaves like a pinched up piece... Use a emory board that girls use for there fingernails..
Just use some long nose pliers. Wiggle the sprue back and forth and it will pop right off.
Yes they are called gate shears as previously stated do-it corp makes a good pair for eleven bucks yea the old twist off method works but once you get good with some shears you can do it twice as fast without any doubt. pour some blanks(no hooks) to practice on and eventually you will be able to do a perfect cut everytime twice as fast but i guess it just depends what all the pourer likes but for eleven bucks id give em a try i sure do like mine
some times it's just easier to use the twist off method make for a better looking product IMO but I use the gating shears for most of my stuff

I have a minnow head mold that comes out lots better with the cutters. The difference is that they're single ground. One side is flat and lets you get in tight to cut things loose. I also use some small side cutters that are single ground that I found at a flea market. I couldn't have afforded them otherwise, they're lots more than 11 bucks, better lucky than good.
These work good. Twisting the sprue off of some styles of jigs will loosen the head. BE VERY CAREFULL WITH LEAD DUST CREATED BY FILING!

SANDING! Be careful sanding, fine particulate matter is created by sanding!!!
+1 on this. I was shown this by a friend of mine that ties commercially, it also lets you smooth up the parting line from the mold.Quote:
