Humminbird 768

Just bought one at BPS for $197.99....or rather traded in my recently purchased 570 for the discounted discontinued 768 since it seemed to be as good of a unit as the 570 and my handheld GPS bit the dust. Killed two birds with one stone I hope (other than not having a handheld for land nav, which isn't that important).

Anyway, any tips, tricks, hints as far as settings or usage from this unit....or feedback in general?? I know I had my old 565 tweeked a little according to a few ideas I got on here and it seemed to work a lot better than default settings. Hope I made the right choice by getting the 768 over the 570. If not, I'll just switch again I suppose.

One important thing to understand about any sonar unit is the shape of the sonar beam...

I think your 768 has the "Dual Beam Plus"....?? Read here for a description...Humminbird: America

Remember... it doesn't matter if what you are trying to see is under the boat....if it's not in that sonar beam...it's not going to show on your screen...

Maybe someone else can chime in with some tips on settings for you....

Yep, Im used to the Dual Beam Plus. I never fully understood (and Im going to read up on that) how to interpet whether the fish are to the left or right of the boat (can't remember which half of or portion of the arch is missing), but I don't really care to have one that reads way out to either side of the boat. Atleast if it's 60* or less, I know that it's under me or close to being under me unless Im in deep water.

if you add the Quadra beam to it, it's optional, you get a screen similar to side scan. it shows what the dual-beam sees + out to each side = to 2X the depth. in other words if you're in 20 feet of water then it looks 40 feet to each side.

I really need to learn how to interpret all that stuff off to the side. If I can see it but dont know what side it's on, it doesn't do me a lot of good. lol

I have no knowledge in how to determine which side of the boat a return is on using the dual beam...maybe someone else can help here...but...the quad beam....

It looks like it will display something similar to the SI which will help show which side the return is on...

You cannot determine whether something was to the left or right side when using a DualBeam unit. You just know whether it is in the narrow or wide beam is all.

The same settings you used on the 565 should work on the 768 unit.

Greg now you have me wondering. The paperwork with the 565 used to mention something about if you were getting half arches...assuming they were fish...if it was the left half showed up on the screen, it was in the edge of the sonar cone on one side, and vise versa for the other. I suppose I meant in the edge of the cone, not totally within the sonar cone. That's been so long ago I can't remember.

Can you tell me a little more about the Quadrabeam Greg? Humminbird's description is a little vague. I will watch the video when I get home where I can use the sound.

Half arches can be caused by a fish not moving through the center of the sonar beam but they can also be caused by a transducer with a bad front-to-back tilt or angle as well.

What do you want to know about the QuadraBeam transducer? It is basically one of our DualBeam (20/60 degree) transducer with two oval shaped 455kHz sonar beams added to it. These are mounted at an angle that will give a total coverage area of 90 degrees or two times the water depth. Those units that can display the sonar data from these left and right angled “Side Beams” do so by showing the data separately. By studying the sonar information shown in the Side View you can determine the direction (to the left, right or under the transducer) to structure or fish and get a general idea of the ‘lay of the land’ under the boat.
