I have a 997 that come with the boat I just bought. My question is what is the most accurate way to mark structure? Will moving the cursor over and marking it work or will it be more accurate to position boat over it and then mark. Just curious. And by the way what is the best way to use cursor for marking if that is accurate. Treat this as side imaging for dummies. :confused:

Be sure to update the software in that 997 unit so that you will have all the latest features in it.
i also have a 997. i have had it since 07. its been a very good unit and still is. i think that you will be very pleased with it. dont forget to do what greg suggested,update the software to current version. good luckQuote:

One last question....(I think) When I scroll to what I want to mark and screen freezes is it ok to zoom in and look at it before I mark it. I guess what I am saying is will it hold those cooridinates once I start the cursor moving until I decide to mark it??

If I remember correctly..there are 2 ways to mark a WP AFTER the screen is frozen....
1. Press the scroll button to activate the cursor....scroll the cursor to the point of interest ....press the "Mark" button...
2. Press the scroll button to activate the cursor....scroll the cursor to the point of interest...."Zoom" in up to 6 times.....center the point of interest in the zoom box...press the "Mark" button...
Remember that pressing the "Mark" button without freezing the screen first (and activating the cursor) places a WP at the boat's current location....

+1 to what Rickie said about marking the waypoints. It won’t matter if you zoom in/out or move hundreds of miles from the location: the unit remembers the coordinates and will set the appropriate waypoint.
To see the software version on your unit it is easiest just to go to the main menu system and scroll over to the Views menu and than down until you see the “Self Test” menu and set it to “Visible”. Exit out of the menus and use the VIEW or EXIT button to scroll through the available Views until you see the “SYSTEM STATUS” View which will show the software version. You can go back and set this View to “Hidden” if you want to.
