Myself i dont have a set amount, I use what I think looks good. Proportional to the jig. This my opinion
It depends on how thick a tail you want when it is wet. Carry some thin tails as well as thick and see what the fish want. Also try two colors; just take a small piece of one color and lay it on top of the second color and tie it in.
That's right, darker on top than the bottom just like a minnow. I've caught fish on a kip tail jig with no more than 10 strands on it, and it looked hideous. Experiment with it and you'll see what works on your local fish. Length is a consideration too. Big appeals to us and looks pretty but doesn't always do it for the fish.
I use to use a small amount, never like the look of a bunch of marabou then i started noticing it started to look too small when wet so I started doubling the amount used and guess what i started catching more better fish I also like to blend colors marabou as well as calf tail. The only time I use a small amount now is on jigs I tie for bream and I do it only for their smaller mouth
P.S. why are calf tails also called kip tails I have always wondered why?
I tried to put two different colors of maribou on a couple jigs the other day, and they caught fish pretty good, but the red bled into the white, and now the skirt looks pink. Any way to keep this from happening?
