I am looking to purchase a HB 788ci to network with my 898. I can't find the thread that was here that discussed software updates required and if the final result was that everything worked as advertised. Any info before I make the plunge would be helpful.

You might to give HB Customer Resources a call and see what software versions they suggest to get the units communicating.
Just load the latest available software. I think that Ethernet was turned on in version 5.410 but there is a newer software version (5.500) available now that has the 5.410 changes in it.
