Just Back from Ky Lake

I just got back from the Lake! My wife and I had a fantastic time, catching some awesome redear and Bluegill. Sadly I had no good luck with Crappie but we caught a couple hundred good panfish over 3 days total fishing. Also fought with catfish the whole time keeping several for the grill this summer. Wind was a little tough on us and I really didn't know where to go for post spawn in general. Anyone feeling sorry for me could pm me with suggestions for depth and conditions to look for next time.( Or a Honey HoleRofl) I may run back down next weekend. We stayed at Moors which was real nice and fished around the island and in Big Bear area. I'll get some pics up in a bit but still got fish to clean.Doh

I saw in another thread that BIGBADDAD can sometimes be found at Bass & Gas. Had I known I'd have stopped in there. Anyway, we Loved it and while Rough River is way closer, I could easily convince the wife to go the extra distance (as long as she can sleep on the way). Thanks to all the guys with tips back in March and April for a Newbie on what to do and where to go. Hopefully I can find the Slabs next trip...Hands Clapping

Nice catch! Looks like you had a good time. I've heard crappie are just now starting to bite again. Curious as to how you cleaned and grilled your catfish. I've caught them and tried eating them but just don't care for it. If these grilled catfish are really good, what do you do different to make them taste better?

Catfish is not my favorite fish either. So my wife and I have experimented with preparing it. My favorite so far is to take a nice fillet and rinse it really well, take aluminum foil and place fillet in the middle after coating with butter or Olive oil. Cracked black pepper and a little salt some dill and/or Lemon juice. I have also used Lemon Butter like you'd dip Crab meat into.Seal it up in the foil with some space for the air inside to help steam/cook the fish. Put it on the grill and check after a few minutes. It cooks fast and absorbs the flavors you add.
Batter fried is ok but the cats have to be smaller and only use the white meat. There is a dark strip of meat that doesn't taste too good to most folks. Thats how we do it...

Had I known I would have stopped in, BBD. Moors Wireless leaves something to be desired or I'd have been online asking questions. We'll meet up no doubt soon enough. I will be heading back down soon. I need to get on some of the Crappie and learn more about the lake in general. I was surprised to find it only took 3 hrs to get there! We used to stop in Draffenville to eat on the way to Reelfoot, but I think those days are over now!LOL

This is a great way to smoke catfish in the 1-5 lb range on a verticle smoker like the brinkman models
skin fish whole instead of filleting rinse dry and apply olive oil.
next take some lemon pepper or as I prefer cajun seasoning and lightly sprinkle over outside of fish.
fire up the charcoal and put in some hickory-apple etc wood that has been soaked in water,fill bowl with water and put the fish on grill dont forget to grease the grill surface so the fish dosnt stick..let this smoke at approx 200 degrees for around 3-4 hrs and enjoy! Bee
