I got a 1/32 oz pro mold from Do It and used a 575 #6 gold Aberdeen eagle claw hook recomended 570-575, but it seems like the hook eye sticks way out compared to other store bought jigs, is that normal or am I using the wrong hook? I want a gold #6 aberdeen with the 1/32 oz for crappie.
It's like the hook eye is sticking out about 1/8" of hook shank between the jig head and the hook eye. Maybe it will work ok? At least it is easy to dip in the paint without painting the hook eye shut. Is it just because I am using a big hook #6 on a small 1/32 oz jig head? Maybe if I buy some straight hooks I can make the jig bend at the eye myself, if I want a bigger hook on a small jig head?
You've got the correct hook. As long as the eye of the hook fits in the recess on the mold, you're golden. I know what you are talking about though. I've seen plenty jigs where the eye differs in distance from the head. Lots of possibilities in what it could be. It could be a variance in the manufacturing tolerance of the hooks. Many large scale commercially produced jigs are made from spincast molds. The shapes on these molds can vary greatly. Plus more than a few manufacturers use the absolute cheapest hooks they can find. The tolerances on these can be way off from standard. And while jig hooks are interchangeable between manufacturers there are going to be some differences in things like eye shank length, hook diameter and so forth but these are in the thousandths of an inch usually. Certainly not anything that should stand out or be visible on sight.
My suggestion would be to look at some raw jigs on ebay and see if the gap is the same. That way you know its likely right and not an issue with your mold, which is very unlikely.
Maybe post up a pic so we can see what is up? Bending hooks is not a good idea. You will weaken the hook. A #6 or #8 hook is the right hook for that size jig according to the Do-It website.
#6 is standard for 1/32 oz head. 1 thing I have found about store bought, the heads tend to run a bit bigger than the actual size. Ok sometimes WAY bigger. Pour 32 of them and see if you come up with an ounce.
I was looking at some of the jig pictures and found one that looks like mine, so I guess it is not that unusual for the hook eye to stick way out like this one.
you may be compairing a 1/32oz head to a 1/16oz head. a 1/16oz will not "stick out" as far
As has been said hooks can run different between different batchs. Look at sickles, some have short shanks from the eyelet to the bend while others are shorter and that's in the same box of hooks. As long as the head molds fully I wouldn't worry about it. I've got the tiny tube head mold and using a size 6 hook leaves alot of length between the lead and the eyelet.
