I scuff them up with a pad I got from Walmart to help the paint stick. As for sealer, I have used Envirotec and currently am using Devcon 2ton which dries faster than the Envirotec

Thanks
could you use an automotive clear coat over the paint? I have been wanting to add some scales to some of my cranks and was just wondering.
I would think you could if you didnt have any reactions with paints and other sealers that are already on the baits. I have not tried any myself. torch, over in the craft dept at Walmart they have a glue that has glitter already in it, might try that and then paint over that with some clear finger nail polish.
I was thinking of using hardware cloth or some small screen to get the scale effect on the cranks.
X2 on everything maachuu said. Here lately, I haven't been sanding the baits. I'll just put on two coats of Opaque White, letting it dry good between coats. I use the Envirotex two part epoxy coating and hang them by the bills to drip. It's the clear finish used on bar and table tops.
