Lake James Sunday

Went to James Sunday morning to fish for walleye and was pulling planer boards along banks. Started catching crappie on boards so I put crappie minnows out behind the boards. Caught 15 crappie and 12 or 13 white bass. My walleye boards are a litttle big for 4 or 6 lb. line, may have to make me a few small boards. Pulled a 1/16 oz jig tipped with a minnow and added some weight on boards closer to the boat. Was running around .7 to .8 mph. My girls had a good day of playing the white bass on crappie rods. Sounds like a good run. I can imagine that the walleye boards were probably just a tad on the bigger sided but I'm sure that they worked like a charm.

I have made me 4 seven inch boards that I m going to try. They are a lot lighter than my 10 and 11 inch boards. I hope they will work good I really like pulling planer boards and this time of year you can get shallow without spooking any fish.

Nice job. I've never pulled any planer boards. I fished James Friday night under the lights and never caught a crappie.

I have been wanting to go at night, but just haven't found the time. Hate to hear you didn't do any good, but did any minnows come in to your lights? I haven't pulled boards a lot for crappie, but I see those guys spiderrigging and long line trolling and I figured the boards would work as well. I have always pulled boards for walleye with success and I figured crappie would hit also. Good luck

From all the info I have read the boards do great for crappie when pulling jigs and/or minnows. Especially when the fish are on shallow mflats since the boards will hokd your hook up off the bottom. I gotta get some before the spawn next year so I can try 'em on the flats. Congrats on the catch. I know the girls had fun.:)

Logs, I'd really love to see some photos of your homemade boards if you'd be kind enough to share. There are a few companies that sell the smaller ones but it'd be good to be able to make my own.

I had plenty of bait around the lights but they were real small. I did catch some white bass and a largemouth but no crappie showed up. I may go again Friday and troll for walleye then put the lights out and try again.
