I have a question for you old-timers

quite a few years back we used to do business with. Reed's tackle they sold some paint that we truly love to use as you were able to put it in the oven and care it it was like glass when it come out I would truly love to find the maker of this paint. If possible we used to buy a lot of material from them in the past they were based in New Jersey I know they are no longer in business . But if you guys ever tried that paint you would love it but maybe not so anymore since the powder craze has started but if anybody knows anything about this paint. Please let me know.

Do you still know the brand of the paint it self? I know nothing of Reed's Tackle.

there are no names on the containers with the paint. It just has the name reed's tackle I still have a can of thinner for that paint but there is no name of the company that made it.

I did Google it a fly tying site come up and talked about them going out of business talked about the son moving to a different state we will Google it one more time and see what comes up. Maybe I'll join that fly tying site and find out more information.

I am from NYC and my dad used to buy LOTS of stuff from Reed. If I remember correctly they were in Caldwell, NJ. My dad used to rod building supplies (thread, blanks, reel seats, etc). I haven't lived in the area since the 1980's and I don't know what happened to Reed Tackle. You might try posting on some of the boards that focus on saltwater fishing for that area. Stripers On Line has a VERY active site. I bet someone there would know what happened to Reed.

BTW, sorry -I don't know anything about the paint.

All I can remember Reed having in the paint line was Lacquer .. they could have had other that I am not aware of ... Now U got me lookin for one of their old catalogs ... As far as I know they have been out of business for some time now.

Alot of the old tiers used to use automotive enamel. Hard as can be and bakes quickly.

thanks guys. I appreciate all this information yes they have went out of business and you may be right on automotive paint because they do you say hot drying method. When they do automotive parts and cars to paint. The only problem is that you have to buy bigger qualities but I would imagine if I got to check them that you can buy them in courts or pints we will look into this and give some feedback on the paint. Yes it has been many years since I've done any business with them. It was back in the 80s and early 90s. I'm sure but not positive sure when my last order was with them after the father died I had some problems with different materials, but they replaced it without any problems. There were a great many tires like myself that had bought from them quite a bit. I am sorry to see them go out of business is they definitely had a lot of stuff besides Rod building and fly tying materials it just like the old herders catalogs. I would truly love to see that one come back into business. If many of you remember herders. They carried lots of fly tying stuff besides selling dye were going your feathers in hair that was a terrific thing with them. There's nothing like the good old days for what we used to buy out of catalogs. Believe it or not I still have some herders die and you know very well how old it is, we still prefer to do our own dye work on lots of my material is the only way that I can get what I want is you probably know buying some of the feathers in hair the colors will change from time to time from the same material supplier so it is very hard to keep a constant color right is you will make up different jigs for marketing. Once they get used to buying that certain one well then they will change I shader two which makes things difficult because you're customers are wondering what is going on besides yourself. I have made tons of phone calls but they blame it on the people that die.

I was wondering about different types of paint that may be cheaper and just as easy to apply, because in all tackle making catalogs they sell powder coat paint for 5 bucks an ounce! I found one place that sells powder coat for 5 bucks a pound! But they only sell it in black and white. I think I may look into the automotive paint and maybe check out different types of lacquer as that's what tackle company's use.
