Ok I love my new 998! BUT!

Ok maybe I got you attention, I do love the 998 as long as I am going below 10 MPH.

Well I guess its my fault, I am not sure where the TD is best placed. I thought I had it correctly but apperantly noootttt!

So heres the problem, above or around ten MPH I lose correct depth reading. Gives me somewhere in the hundreds, and I know that isnt correct because I was in reelfoot. Plus while on plane I have huge amount of water spraying everywhere.

So heres what I have, the bottom of the TD is mounted just below the surface of the boat maybe a 1/4 inch, and not in line with any of the rivets. But there are rivets that run from the left to right on the very back. Oh yea its an alumincraft navigator 165 if that helps.

While were on plan I took a look at the TD (the best I could without a raincoat). But I am not sure what I am supposed to be seeing. It looks like it is riding on top of the water but the leading edge might be a little low.

Well needless to say, I am sure I need to move the TD up or down but dont know which way to go. I also dont know what I am looking for to make sure it is correct, should there be water spraying about or not? I am a little lost, any help would be appreciated.

Oh yea man I love the detail in these side scan. I was watching it the whole time while at reelfoot, I dont think I even saw any of the scenery.

It sounds like your installation is very similar to mine and pretty much the way HB says it needs to be. My thoughts are these units are not designed to read detail at plane speeds. That is why I run a stand-alone unit to read bottom and detail at plane speeds. Once I come off plane, then the SI takes over.

A pic would help. You might adjust the trailing edge down say about 5 degrees below horizontal.

I have my 998 on a lund sounds like about the same setup. I do not get a bunch of spray, but still lose bottom about 12 to 14 MPH moved the TD up ,down, sideways. It still loses bottom I think unless it's mounted thou the hull it will get the same results. I have just learned to live with it,cause it does everything else so well

My 898 TD is mounted at the bottom hull also but under the transom step and near the center in front of the motor. I get SI well past 10mph and never lose bottom even on plane. The max speed is only about 31mph though.

i have 997 on triton bass boat.reads bottom at speeds at 45mph.mounted next to drain plug.sometimes it real read up to 50 but not all the time.watch for those stumps down there at realfoot

Tilt the back of the transducer down a little. You could lower the entire unit as well but the lower it goes the more danger comes into play. As for the spray, if it is getting in the boat you can fill in the void between the boat and ducer with foam or something.

My understanding is the ducer should be positioned 1/2 the thickness of the ducer below the botton of the boat
