788ci hd di
Just bought this unit..Does anyone have any suggestions as far as what initial setting should be changed for best performance. Any comments on this unit?? Also I tryed installing it tonight and found that the power cable was to short to reach directly to the battery. Is it alright to buy extra wire and just extend it to the battery or should I call humminbird and get a longer cable that reaches direct??

Don't know the settings, but buying extra wire will be OK. Make sure that the wire you are using is not a thinner gauge than the factory wire and wrap the connections with good electrical tape after making the connections. I have used the proper size wire nuts with a squirt of silicone in them and then wrap with tape. The silicone keeps the wires from corroding and the tape helps secure it, then if you want to disconnect at a later date there are no wires to cut. I am sure there are other ways, but I have been doing that for years and it work for me. You should also add an inline fuse between the unit and battery.

Menu settings out of the box are a good start.
That is the only size power cable that we have so you will have to add your own wire. The PC-10 power cable that came with the 788ci HD DI unit uses a 22 gauge multi-stranded copper wire. You need to use at least a 22 gauge wire to lengthen it as well. If you are needing to extend it more than a few feet than you need to go one gauge size larger. Solder all connections and seal them against moisture using marine grade heat shrink tubing for best long lasting results. Don’t forget the in-line fuse and fuse holder. I recommend the flat automotive type blade fuses and waterproof fuse holder.

I have the same unit, used the factory pwr cable and tied into my power box at the bow of the boat (zero interference). Orginally I had the transducer mounted directly to my trolling motor, however after i trashed my shaft I put a peice of rubber between the motor and the mount and things really sharpened up. I boosted my noise up one and left the remaining setting as is. Great unit, increadable detail.
