First jigs
Thumbs UpHere is a picture of some jigs that I tied last night. These are my first ones. With practice I hope one day they look like all of yours. One of my knots got on the eye of one jig. I do have to pick up some more thread so I can match my chenille. I was pleased, what do you all think? The good and the bad please.

They're good for your first time... but I will give you some constructive criticism... Don't use the whole quill of the feather, pinch the soft hackle on the sides and cut it off close to the shaft of the quill... it may take a little practice but I'm sure you'll like the results. Good job and may you tie many more. :)

In my opinion the tails are much too long. As a general rule I make my tails about 1/3 of what the jig was. Also, when using marabou you should pull it off the quill before you tie it. Yours are much better than when I started though. Look at the videos in the stickies at the top of this forum and also on you tube. Welcome to jig tying.

Thanks guys, they are long now that I looked at them since you 2 mentioned it. I will give it a try tomorrow. Thanks again.

Long is not the worst part, you need to take the barbules off the stem before you tie them in and always cut the end you tie in and not the other end.
Colors look good and they will probably catch fish, but if you want the best looking and best action you need to leave the stem in the trash can.
Not bad for your first though and just keep trying,

Nice job, everyone starts somewhere. Lookup greyhackle54 on you tube he has a few series on crappie jigs. Keep at it!

What size marabou do you all use. I have the mini, and its kinda tuff to get enough off the stem. Is there a better feather that is a bit easier to use? I did tie a few tonight and man they look alot better with no stem. Thanks guys.

Not bad, they'll fish fine. Sounds like you have the fluffs, not the full marabou feathers.

Told ya its a little tricky working with that soft marabou after you cut it lol... if you want to know a trick I use... After I cut it off the stem I wet my finger tips and twist the end i'm going to tie in... very lightly you don't want it wet just enough to hold it together a little.
