vise question?
i am looking for a vise and have been looking at all my options. I noticed that some of the reviews posted by customers on the retail websites have commented on the size of the hook that the vise will hold. Is there something specific that I should be looking at when it comes to vises the largest hook that i have so far to tie is a #4 regular and sickle hook.

most freshwater vises will accomodate a 1/0 down to #12 if i recall correctly.

happy is correct. There are lot's of good vise's out there. If you have big hands one thing you want to check is that your hands are going to be comfortable when you're tying, you don't want your hands to cramp up while you're tying. I don't know if you have access to a shop where you can try them or a local fly tying club where members might allow you to try theirs but it helps.

The only time jaw size should come up is if you are tying on hooks larger than 1/0 or smaller than 18. Almost all vises will handle hooks between these two sizes.

I tie on a PEAK vise it has 3 different jaws , I do not remember what they say on hook size compared to jaw size but I use standard jaw from #1/0 down to a size 16, midge jaw for everything below 16 and saltwater jaw for 2/0 and up but I have been looking at a ANVIL APEX vise that they say will adjust from 6/0 all the way down to a size 30. I also tie flies while at a bass pro fly tying a few weeks ago i tied some #18 zebra midges and I do like the vise. so when I decided to get a new vise this is the one I will consider first

One of the simplest and easy vises to use are the Regal style vises with a spring handle. All you do is squeese the handle to open the vise and put in the hook. NO adjusting is needed for different hook sizes. They come in rotary or fixed, prices start at about $30 for imported knock off models with Made in USA $100 plus depending on what model you get.
