fuel gauge not working
i have 2 boats as well as my brother ad dad each have a boat. none of the fuel gauges work. can anyone give me a clue on how to get a fuel gauge to work properly? how do they work and where should i start to figure out what is wrong? the sending unit? or the gauge or the wires? all have in hull fuel tanks. the boats range from 1987 to 2001 year models. any help would be great. thanks

There are three wires involved, plus possibly a fourth for the gauge light. You should have one lead labelled "I" that will be at 12V when the key is on. You'll have a lead labelled "S", which comes from the sender, and a ground lead labelled "G".
With the key on, you should measure 12V between I and G. (some vehicles regulate it down, so don't sweat it if you see a lower voltage) The voltage between S and G will vary as the tank sender moves up and down. A quick and dirty way to check the gauge is to ground the S wire. This will peg the needle if the gauge works.

And the sender must have a ground on it.
