Help Please
Attachment 59063Attachment 59064Can anyone help me trouble shoot this problem? The images are from my 1198 that is attached to a terrova. I was getting bad engine feedback to the point the screen was not viewable. When I ran the motor on max power the noise from the motor did not show, but I still got the cloudy effects shown in these pictures. I have run new wires from the battery to the unit, I have run a jumper wire from the trolling motor battery to the depth finder battery, I have turned the noise filters on the unit up to high 3, and I removed the transducer completely from the motor. By removing the transducer the motor noise has been removed, but the cloudy display is still there as shown in the pictures. It is so bad that I have given up on the 455 frequency. I can run on 800 but that has its limitations. Any help would be appreciated. Additionally, I tried this unit on the back of the boat where my 997 sits and the interference still displays on the unit.[attachment=1][attachment=2]

Where is the transducer mounted in the second pic? On the transom or up front? I see the speed is 3.7 so I assume the engine is running. Also, did you mean to say you had engine noise from the beginning. Engine meaning the big high dollar machine hung on the transom, not the trolling motor. If the trolling motor is not on and the noise is from the main engine then it could be ignition noise. Simple to find out buy just powering down from idle speed and turn off the engine immediately and watch the screen to see if the clouds go away. I assume you have the PC 11 cable with the choke inline (big ball in the cable). If not get one. You may have to install some ferrite chokes on the trolling motor leads and maybe even the cranking leads to the engine if noise is confirmed to be coming from there.

The transducer is mounted on the trolling motor up front in both pics. This is trolling motor related, the big engine is not a factor. I meant to say trolling motor not engine. I do have a choke in my power cord for the unit. I took the transducer off the trolling motor and just hung it in the water. The clouds were still there. This was after I turned the power off to the trolling motor. I purchased some RF Chokes from radio shack for the trolling motor to combat the interference when the trolling motor is running, but what can be causing the cloudy images when the trolling motor is off and the transducer is no where close to it?

Well, I tried to duplicate the cloudiness on my 898 on some recordings I took this morning but no amount of adjustments to sensitivity, contrast or sharpness caused my water column to get cloudy. Run the unit's demo screen in simulation mode to see if those images are cloudy. If not, if the water column is clear, then I would think the fault is with the transducer. Did you plug in the transducer from your 997? If the unit displays a good clean water column then it narrows it down to your transducer on the 1198. If it's still cloudy with the other transducer then it's time to call HB for some assistance.

I tested the 1198 on the 997 transducer and the water column was cloudy. IT is not cloudy on the 997 using the 997 trandsucer. I was so fustrated that I left without checking the 997 on the 1198 transducer. I will give it a go tomorrow on that one.

It's sure sounding like it's a problem in the 1198. Hope you get it cleared up soon. At least you have the 997 if you have to send the 1198 in to HB.
Good luck.

If you moved it to another transducer and away from the TM and still got the issue. Then it's the unit.
For s and g's, restore defaults. It's worth a try before sending the unit back to the factory.

DId it 4 times. Once after each wire configuration change. No luck with that one lol.

Played around a little more with my 898. With the unit in simulator mode if I turn up to max sensitivity on the SI and DI I do see something like what you are talking about. I didn't see that with my recordings though. You have probably checked that already but just letting you know that's a possibility. I assume you have done a reset too. Can't think of anything else to check before calling HB.

Well I talked to a cs rep and sent them an email with my issues. Lets see where this goes. Right now it is in the engineer's hands.
