Either one of these are pretty good. Teleflex Universal Hourmeters - iboats.com Most people just install them hooking the input to the purple wire off the ignition switch. The drawback on this is that it runs as long as the switch is on whether the motor is running or not. There may be another way (Canepole's idea) I have not tried that involves getting a hot tub pressure switch that is adjustable 1-5 lbs. If you have a good steady stream of water at your tell tale tube you can adapt it to that hose using a "T" connector and then run power for the meter thru it's micro switch. Then mount the meter under the cowling. Another possibility would be adapting it to your water pressure gauge if you have one. Then the gauge could be mounted at the console. If you go this route let us know how it works.
Hi Bill, thanks for the reply. I was wondering if there was a way to wire it off the tachometer. The only gauges I have are the speedo and tach. I don't remember ever having the key switch on while the motor was not running. Would you do that for inspection and/or when doing repairs?
Set the hook.
Bill.....If my key switch is on .....my motor is running. Why would you want that switch on with your motor not running?
Check out tinytach. They have a hourmeter built in, are very easy to install, and take up little space. My buddy has one, and loves it.
Welcome To Tiny-Tach. Small and economical tachometers for gas and diesel engines.
Hi Drum, thanks for the link. They look pretty cool. Nice and small. Hands Clapping

People that have boom boxes wired to their switch. Or anything else that they may want working while not running. You would be amazed at the number of people that don't realize they can get power directly from their battery. Or kids playing in the boat and turning the key on. The solutions are simple but I guess not for all.
