596c HD Di question about software

Ok, I recieved my 596c HD Di today and can't wait to install it. The first thing I noticed when I registered it at Humminbird was that there is a software upgrade available. The quick start guide says to download the software to an SD card and install the software on the unit. Guess what. The 596cHD Di doesn't have a sd card slot, at least I haven't found it. I see this note that says if your model doesn't have a card slot you can purchase an optional pc connect cable! :mad:
Are these software upgrades necessary, and if they are shouldn't a cable come with the unit?
Any comments appreciated.

I think all manufacturers sell the PC connect cable as an extra. I had to buy one for my Garmin, and also for my H/B. Most of the software upgrades tell you what they are for, you can make the judgment whether you need to do the upgrade or not.

Just got my 596 2 weeks ago and the only update is HumminbirdPC. If that's the one it shows for you too then I don't think it's an update for your finder..it's a program to download to your computer. If I'm wrong someone please correct me and explain what Humminbird PC is for.

HBPC is used for managing waypoints on your pc....

It also is neccessary for updating the units that do not have a card slot...(along with the pc connect cable)...

I never update my unit until I watch the boards for a while to see if there are any bugs in the new software versions.....

Then I decide if the update features are worth the chance of bugging up my unit...

I still run 4.750 on my 1197 because there have just not been any updates since then that I feel will enhance my fishing....

Now...if HB will put a fix for the "Donut" in an update...that's a different story...
