I just got a new "do-it" mold and was wandering if any of

you folks have used one of these ? I tried a few yesterday but cant seem to get it just right, its got that little flat piece of metal that you put through the middle of the mold to make it work but I couldnt seem to get the "little ears" to both come out proper size. was hoping someone might have or uses one of these and could give me some pointers. here is a picture of it :

If you been making jigs, etc. long, you probably know as much or more than I do. I have been looking a this mold, but don't have it yet. I'd be interested in what you do to get it to pour correctly. Temp of lead, is mold hot, purity of lead, etc...

I don't know much about pouring lead, but in the tools and die world, the little ears will be the hardest to fill. You may need to pre-heat your mold a little more so the lead will not freeze off while tryin to fill out the skinny portions of the mold. Don't know if this mold has any vents in these areas, but that may be a possibility to help with the flow. I would imagine heatin the mold more would prolly help the most.

Getting the mold hot so that the lead can pour to the the ends of the mold is probably the most important thing. My sinkers almays look better the longer I pour and the hotter the mold gets.

Thanks guys, I think I will increase the heat in my pot higher than what I use to pour heads, I do normally set the mold on the top of the pot as the lead melts and the pot warms up but I guess I might have to preheat the mold a little more also some

Right, I always place my mold on top of the pot while the pot is heating up. when the lead is ready, so is the mold... I must have 15-20 DoIt's and haven't had any venting problems. I have modified a lot of them to accept different size and type hooks than they were designed for, but no problems filling the cavity..

I always used a Bernzomatic torch with mapp gas to pre-heat the mold. Never thought about putting it on top of the pot...good idea! Thumbs Up

If you have an insert that makes the slot in the weight then it needs to be heated also.

You are so right about that, I forgot to mention it.. I learened that the first time I tried to make bullet weights. I have also tried a ultra thin coat of grease on the insert too, seems to work for me......
