HB 898c SD cards

Just got my new HB and need to pick up a couple SD cards for it. Have read anywhere on the size it will take. I have a deer camera that will only take 1GB (which are hard to find)and D camera that will only take up to 2 GB. Anyone know what the HB will take? Would like to get some 4 GB so that I can record a lot.

How much does recording use on a SD card?
Hope to get it on the water this weekend.

Thanks for any advice of knowlegde.

i bought a 2 and a 4 gb and both worked

I have 4Gb now and will pick me up another. How much space does recording usie on a card?

I think the HB units will take up to a 32gb card..

HB recommends the Sandisk Extreme III card...and if you can find the 30mb/s trasfer rate cards...your unit will not have any lag time whatsoever...

Keep your recordings to less than 30 minutes...larger recordings just take longer to upload into Humviewer...

Thanks for the input. I just put a 8GB in it that the wife bought at Thankgiving on sale it seen it ok.
How large is the file for 30 minutes?
Why are some cards faster than others?
I will check out the Sandisk Extreme III when i buy another card.
Hope to get on the water with it this weekend if the wife will let me.

This is from one of our Software Engineers about the size of a Sonar Recording file:
“It is impossible to give an absolute answer to this question. The recording rate is not fixed and several factors can affect the actual recording data rate. Every byte from each ping is recorded. Faster ping rates and deep water (more bytes per ping) lead towards a high data rate per minute of recording. A faster SD card will also create a higher data rate due to the fact that the unit can ping faster and keep up with writing to the card. The only way to predict your recording data rate is to make a test recording with your SD card on your unit at a similar depth that you plan to record. That should give you an idea of how much data your unit will record in a certain time period at that depth. Anyone else's recording rate numbers are not a good measure of how much data your unit will record.”

Having said all that I can tell you that we did a little test of our own and found that you use approximately 56MB of memory space for 10 minutes of Sonar Recording so a 30 minute recording would be about 168MB in size (your mileage may vary though).

Memory cards come in different speed ratings and this is probably due with how they are built. The faster the memory card the faster Screen Snapshots will be saved and the less likelihood that there will be any lag between the unit and the memory card. If you have ever used a slow memory card in a digital camera you will understand this as you may have had to wait for the camera to finish writing the last picture to the memory card before you can take the next picture.

Thanks a lot. i have started doing some recording for short periods (10 min or so just to see the size). Just got on the water with the new 898 this week so i have not had time to review the records. I record several amd the largest was 64 m. On an 8 g card that should work ok for several days fishing.
