I am going to change oil and lower unit lube in my 25 hp Mercury Motor. The guy at the marine garage quoted me a price of $125 to do both. I was looking online and found that I can change it all myself for $40. Is the job very difficult to do. I have all the specs on how much oil it takes and wondering if it is just the smart route to save money. $85.00 would pay for a lot of fish at Long John's right now. :confused:
When you say oil I guess you have a 4 stroke motor and if that is correct that is easy to change no need to pay to do that,and lower unit lube that is no problem either.I bought a small pump that screw's on a quart bottle that pump's it back in and if you do it be sure to change the little gasket's that go around the drain screw and vent screw on the lower unit.
Yes, invest in one of those pumps. It makes for a very easy job of it.
if it's a four stroke you should have a oil filter that should be changed
How many vent holes does your lower unit have? Mine is a 2005 Mercury 60hp 4 stroke and has (1) drain/fill hole and (2) vent holes.
Set the hook.
Mine is a 90 merc two stroke and it has two vent holes at top of foot, some just have one.. After u drain oil out at bottom hole, refill from the bottom hole until oil runs out of top vent holes, then put screws back in. Be sure not to lose the seal washers behind the screws.
My manual say's: when all three plug's are removed and old lube has been drained out, to hook up the lube to the bottom hole (drain/fill hole) and add lube until the lube appears at the front vent hole. At that point stop adding lube, install the front vent plug with a NEW plug gasket then continue filling until the lube appears at the rear vent hole. At that point stop filling and install the rear vent plug with a NEW plug gasket, remove lube nozzle from drain/fill hole and install the drain/fill plug with a NEW plug gasket.
