Worms in the Crappie !!!

Ok, this is kinda gross, but I have heard several people talking about finding worms in the crappie they are catching. Does anyone know what causes this and it will hurt you to eat them? I too have seen some in the past but not lately. I fillet mine, and the worms were between the skin and the meat. if you dont fillet them, then you would not no they are there. Makes me wonder if I have ever eaten any before, because I use to not fillet them. Anyway, sorry to bring up such a nasty subject.

I haven't heard of anything like that from the DNR. I know that stripers have been reported to have mouth maggots and heard they don't hurt the fish. There is no visible sign on the outside skin and scales correct? Is this in Clark hill lake only? Let me know and I will research that.

The crappie I am talking about came out of Greenwood.

Needs to be talked about if they are showing up. First off I wouldn't eat them if I found any worms in em. Sounds like the fish has a parasite in them. What lake are the fish coming from or, are they being caught in a pond, if so it may be a water run off problem with something being washed into the water. I have not alway filleted my fish either so I just hope I have not ate any before.:(

I didn't see your response until after I posted. I will be checking the fish from there closely. Thanks for the info.
I have not seen any in the fish I have caught in Greenwood.

caught some bream in a pond a few years back that had little worms wigglin in the fins. I saw them before I cleaned them so back they went.

Yeah I have seen em in pond fish too.

Call the DNR. Some can be digested just fine with no ill effects, some may be harmful. It depends on what kind of parasite it is. I wouldn't eat 'em.

I promise you, if I find a worm in my little river crappie it WILL NOT be ate! I would contact DNR TimK...they might can provide some insight into the subject.
