Cane vs. Bamboo? How long before it dies?

Good Morning all,

Crappie Newbie here.... I have obtained a wealth of information on here already. I picked up my Lake map, and have found some spots I'd like to drop brush piles.

I got 2 questions,

Is there a difference between Cane and Bamboo? I live here along the Texas Coast and i'v always been told we have "cane" in our back yard from my parents. But looking at peoples pictures on here, they call it bamboo... and what we have looks like these pictures.

Also, I'm thinking about cutting the bamboo/cane down on Saturday, and setting them in the buckets. I plan on transporting them to the lake the following Saturday and deep 6 them. Is the 7 days too much time to pass for all the green to turn brown and fall off?

I could possibly try ot make them Wednesday/Thursday but with work it will be tough.

Or does it not matter that much?

What are the chances if I drop the bucket down with the cane that they stand straight up? Any tricks to dropping them in lets say 18-20' and not have them fall over?

Cane is bamboo. There's two varieties of cane in North America. They are our only native bamboos. Since the cane has hollow chambers in it, you don't have to worry about it standing up, it will.

Thanks for the input. I did some more research on the web "cane vs. bamboo" and your right! Pictures I see is Exactly what we have in our backyard. I'm ready to get to work!

Will it all die and leaves begin to fall off and come brittle within 7 days of cutting it down before sinking them? I want to cut them down this Saturday, put them in buckets, and drive to the lake next Saturday.

The leaves may turn brown, but will not fall off. Also I suggest using cinder blocks, I used a lot less cement this way and they seemed easier to carry. If you go with the buckets instead, put a garbage bag in them before you pour and when it dries you can slide the block of cement out and reuse the bucket.

Will confess haven`t ever used `boo/ cane, however many persons posting here seem to have better luck angling the cane out at an angle, leaving a less dense center, creating an "umbrella " or "mushroom" effect; seems to draw bigger crappies than a straight vertical pattern. Good luck and let us know how they do, sir.

This is what I am planning on doing for the 1st go around. I plan on making them here, covering them with a tarp, and trailering them to the lake, about 3 1/2 hours away.

I was thinkin about building about 12 bamboo brush piles. with 3 trees, for a total of (5) spots.

I was going to have (2) different spots with 3 buckets of bamboo placed at each spot.
I am going to primarily use these spots to night fish at night with the family. I was going to drop them in a straight line (one near back of boat, middle, and front). I will be tieing up to stumps and I pretty much know how my 24' boat will sit. That way everyone will be fishing just off to the side of the brush or slighlty above.

The other (2) spots, I though about putting them in a straight line as well, but instead of the middle one being bamboo, I was going to use a tree which may be a little more dense. That way baitfish can hide in the middle one more, and BIG crappie in the even less dense bamboo on the outide (or towards front and rear of boat)

The last spot I was going to expirement with and kind of put in a triangle. Use 2 bamboo and a Tree.

Thanks for the idea of using plastic trash bags so I can remove and re-use the buckets.

I think the depths I am going to target are just off the main creek in about 15-25' of water. I will also drop one deeper maybe in 35-40' for the summertime.

The last batch of what I call river cane (because it is'nt near as big as some of the boo pictures i have seen on here) , only about as big around as your thumb , I made about 10 condos and had to wait a week for good weather to sink them. The leaves changed shades of green but were by all means still very green a week later. After being in the water about 3 weeks i fished them and snagged one of the leaves .... still green :)
